PEIPB Vision/Mission
The purpose of the Prince Edward Island Pharmacy Board is to regulate the practice of pharmacy in the province so as to promote a high standard and safeguard the welfare of the public with regard to pharmaceutical service.
The Prince Edward Island Pharmacy Board (the “Board) is a body incorporated in 1983 with a (current) Pharmacy Act statute under the Laws of Prince Edward Island, Pharmacy Act R.S.P.E.I. 1988, Cap. P-6.
The Board is composed of members appointed by the Minister of Health:
(a) The majority shall be licensed pharmacists nominated by the P.E.I. Pharmaceutical Association; (b) No less than 15% shall be a lay person nominated by the P.E.I. Pharmaceutical Association; (c) One person shall be a person, who in the opinion of the Minister is knowledgeable about and representative of the interests of the pharmaceutical operations for which the Minister is responsible.
Appointments are for a maximum three-year term, and may not be for more than two consecutive terms. Them Members chooses one of its pharmacist members as Chair, and appoints a pharmacist as a Registrar.
The Board fulfills its obligation of public protection by:
(a) Defining the necessary requirements for licensure as a pharmacist in Prince Edward Island; (b) Ensuring that pharmacists maintain their ability to practice professionally (through C.E. programs, assessments, etc) (c) Inspecting and accrediting pharmacies; (d) Defining standards of practice to promote and protect the welfare of the public; (e) Monitoring the profession to ensure these standards are adhered to; (f) Responding to complaints and, in some instances, exercise disciplinary actions; (g) Prescribe what drugs shall be subject to restricted distribution.
