Sale of tobacco through pharmacies

As of August 31, 2005 the sale of tobacco through pharmacies is as follows:

AB: Tobacco is not permitted to be sold from the pharmacy as legally defined in the Pharmaceutical Profession Act.  Tobacco may, however, be sold from premises within which pharmacies are located.

 

BC: Pharmacies are permitted to sell tobacco.

 

MB: Manitoba Pharmaceutical Association policy encourages pharmacists to not sell tobacco products.

 

NB: Provincial legislation has prohibited sale of tobacco from pharmacies since July 1, 1997.

 

NL: Standards of Practice have prohibited sale of tobacco from pharmacies since January 1, 2005.

 

NS: Tobacco Access Act amended in 1999 to ban the sale of tobacco products from pharmacies.

 

NT: Sale from pharmacies currently permitted.  Some pressure to include a provision in the proposed Tobacco Control Act restricting tobacco sales from pharmacies, but no final decision made to-date.

 

ON: Not permitted.

 

PE: Sale from pharmacies currently permitted, but there are negotiations underway by the PEI Pharmacists Association for ban.

 

QC: Unknown

 

SK: Professional services area is not permitted to include tobacco.
